Iron Infusion with ferric carboxymaltose (FCM)

Iron Infusions

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies and can often lead to anaemia, causing fatigue, weakness, and reduced quality of life. At Westside Medical Centre in Port Macquarie, we provide safe and effective iron infusions (Ferinject) to help restore iron levels and improve overall wellbeing.

We welcome both new and existing patients for iron infusions. If you’ve been advised that an infusion is the best option for you, our team will ensure the process is smooth, safe, and supported.

Service Information

Why Iron Infusions May Be Recommended
While some people manage iron deficiency with oral supplements, others may require an infusion when:

  • Oral supplements are not tolerated or effective
  • There is a significant deficiency that needs rapid correction
  • Medical conditions interfere with iron absorption
  • Anaemia is impacting daily function and quality of life

What to Expect: Your iron infusion will be performed in a safe, clinical setting under the supervision of a qualified GP or nurse. The procedure usually takes around 30–45 minutes, with additional time allowed for monitoring afterwards to ensure your comfort and safety.

Out‑of‑Pocket Costs: There is a $100 out‑of‑pocket fee for iron infusions at Westside Medical Centre.

For Existing Patients: If you are already a patient of our practice, your GP will help arrange everything you need for your iron infusion, including any required tests and prescriptions.

For New Patients: If you are referred from another GP, please bring the following to your appointment:

  • A referral letter from your treating doctor requesting the infusion and outlining clinical need
  • Recent pathology results, including iron studies and a full blood count
  • The prescribed Ferinject medication, collected from your pharmacy

Please note: If you don’t have the required information and medication on the day, we may need to reschedule your infusion.

After Your Infusion
You may notice an improvement in energy levels and symptoms within a few weeks. Your GP will discuss any follow‑up blood tests or ongoing management required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions Answered

When is an iron infusion recommended?

An iron infusion is recommended for patients with iron deficiency anaemia or significant iron deficiency that has not improved with oral iron supplements and dietary changes. Your GP will assess your symptoms and blood results to determine whether an iron infusion is appropriate.

How long does an iron infusion take at Westside Medical Centre?

You can expect to be in the clinic for around one hour for an iron infusion, including preparation time and post-infusion monitoring.

The infusion itself usually takes about 15 minutes.

Do I need a referral for an iron infusion?

If your regular GP does not provide iron infusions and you wish to have your infusion at Westside Medical Centre, we require a letter from your GP outlining your condition and providing your recent pathology results. This ensures the treatment is safe and appropriate for you.

Are there any side effects after an iron infusion?

Side effects after an iron infusion are uncommon. Some patients may experience mild temporary symptoms such as headache, dizziness or muscle aches. Your GP or nurse will monitor you after the procedure and advise you on what to expect and when to seek further care if needed.

Are iron infusions covered by Medicare at Westside Medical Centre?

No. Iron infusions at Westside Medical Centre are not covered by Medicare. The procedure attracts a private fee of $200 for all patients.
