Skin Cancer: Early Detection and Treatment
Skin Checks
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and living in Port Macquarie means enjoying plenty of sunshine — but also facing increased risk. At Westside Medical Centre, our experienced GPs provide thorough, professional skin checks designed to detect problems early and give you peace of mind.
Most skin cancer management, including surgical excisions, can be carried out right here in our clinic. For more complex cases, we’ll arrange timely referrals to trusted dermatologists or surgeons. Your skin health is our priority — whether it’s a routine check, a spot you’re concerned about, or ongoing skin care, we’re here to help.

- Biopsies of suspicious lesions
- Surgical excision of skin cancers
- Cryotherapy for sunspots and other skin lesions
- Ongoing monitoring for patients at higher risk
Referral for Complex Cases: If your condition requires more advanced care, we’ll refer you to a dermatologist or surgeon and work closely with them to ensure seamless continuity of care.
Frequently Asked Questions
Your Skin Check Questions Answered
How often should I have a skin check in Port Macquarie?
Most patients benefit from a yearly skin check, especially in a high–sun exposure region like Port Macquarie. You should also book your appointment sooner if you notice any new, changing or concerning skin lesions.
For patients with a higher risk of skin cancer, your GP may recommend more frequent skin checks than the standard 12-month interval.
What are the warning signs of skin cancer?
Warning signs of skin cancer include any new spots or changes to existing moles or lesions. Look out for:
- A spot that looks noticeably different from others
- Changes in the size, shape or colour of a mole
- A spot that bleeds, crusts or doesn’t heal
- A lesion that becomes itchy, painful or tender
If you notice any of these changes, book a skin check with your GP promptly.
Do I need a referral for a skin check at Westside Medical Centre?
No. You do not need a referral for a skin check at Westside Medical Centre. Simply book an appointment with one of our GPs.
Can suspicious moles be removed on the same day at Westside Medical Centre?
Usually, suspicious moles cannot be removed on the same day as your initial skin check. Procedures need to be booked separately because they require a dedicated appointment time, a procedure room, and the attendance of both your GP and a nurse. If a mole needs removal, your GP will arrange the earliest suitable procedure appointment.
Are skin cancer checks and treatments bulk billed at Westside Medical Centre?
GP skin checks at Westside Medical Centre are bulk billed for Medicare and DVA card holders.
If you require a biopsy or excision of a skin lesion, this will incur a private procedure fee. Full details are available on our fees page.
